About us
We are a corporate, commercial and compliance-focused law firm in Kuala Lumpur. We act for public listed companies, multinationals and growing private companies on commercial contracts, corporate M&A and equity fundraising, employment documentation, corporate governance, and data protection, including acting as outsourced Data Protection Officer under the PDPA.
We are small on purpose. That shapes what chambering here is like, and it is the reason for the section below.
What nine months here will and will not give you
You are choosing where to read, and you should choose with your eyes open. Both columns are true.
What you will get
- Direct supervision from your master, not from three layers above you
- Drafting from a blank page, not only marking up someone else's precedent
- A whole file from first enquiry through engagement letter to completion
- Client meetings you attend, and the note that comes out of them
- Honest feedback on your written work, in detail and without softening
- Extensive use of AI tools on live matters, and the habit of checking what they produce
- Proper support with your petition and your call
What you will not get
- A large cohort of fellow pupils to move through it with
- A formal rotation across departments, because we do not have departments
- A structured lecture programme; you learn on matters
- Much litigation. Our work is corporate, commercial and compliance
- Anonymity. Your work is visible, which cuts both ways
Who we are looking for
- Qualified to commence pupillage: a recognised law degree, CLP completed, or called to the Bar of England and Wales.
- Clear thinking and clear writing. Most of what we produce is written, and it goes to clients who read carefully.
- Research that holds up when someone pushes on it.
- Care with detail. In compliance work the detail is the job.
- Able to use AI tools without outsourcing your judgment to them.
Mandarin is a real advantage, as a good part of our client base works bilingually.
What happens after the nine months
For the right person, there is a route to Associate here. We would rather train someone through pupillage and keep them than recruit a stranger afterwards.
We cannot promise it to every pupil, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that the decision is made on your work over nine months, which is a fairer test than an interview.
Being straight with you
The work is demanding and the deadlines are real. A small firm means more responsibility earlier than you may feel ready for, and nowhere to hide when something is wrong.
In return you get a master who reads your drafts properly, work that matters to a client, and credit for what you contribute.
How to apply
Email your CV to careers@lpplaw.my with the subject “Chambering Application - [Your Name]”, and include your law school transcript and when you are able to start reading.
In your note, tell us why corporate, commercial or compliance work interests you rather than litigation, and tell us about one piece of written work you were asked to revise and what you changed. A paragraph each is enough. We are more interested in your judgment than in your enthusiasm.
Because of the volume of applications we receive, we may not be able to respond to every one.
